t. Peter's Anglican Church

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth
- John 1:14

Father Samuel L. Edwards has served as vicar of St. Peter's Church since June 1, 2009.  He is a native of Haywood County.  After graduation from Tuscola High School in 1972, he received degrees with honors from Brevard College, The American University (Washington, DC), and Nashotah House Seminary (Nashotah, Wisconsin).

His ministry has been characterized by a strong focus on teaching grounded in Holy Scripture and the tradition of the undivided Church.  He is a frequently published writer, and his efforts are not confined strictly to Church issues:  Many Haywood County residents will have read his regular opinion columns on political and cultural issues published in The Mountaineer in 2007 and 2008.

Ordained Deacon in The Episcopal Church by the late Bishop William G. Weinhauer and Priest by the late Bishop Robert E. Terwilliger, Fr Edwards served as pastor of Episcopal Church congregations in Texas and Maryland.  For seven years he was Executive Director of Forward in Faith, North America, then the largest organization of traditionally-minded Episcopalians.  Since entering the traditional Anglican Church in 2002, he has served congregations in Maryland, Virginia, Alabama and North Carolina.  He is a member of the Society of Saint Michael the Archangel, a brotherhood of Anglican clergy living under a common rule of life but not in community.

In addition to his church work, Father Edwards teaches Adult Basic Education (GED) classes under the aegis of Haywood Community College and is active politically.  He resides in Waynesville with his wife of 30 years, the former Kay Waddell.  They have two adult children.
